CHARMS | COINS | MEDALLIONS

By jamesplayuh

Charms Overview
Charms are special loot items which are automatically used when:
  1. They are received into inventory
  2. A qualifying action occurs – usually doing a mission, attacking someone or being attacked
It is possible for more than one charm to be used at a single time, but only one of each applicable type. (See the end of this article for a series of screenshot examples.) Charms can come in the form of “medallions”, “coins” and “items.”
NOTE: Charms are NOT used in Gang Wars.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Even if you have used charms many, many times, PLEASE read this article as I believe it will add to your knowledge and correct some misinformation that has been distributed. I’m in the process of determining the mathematical impact of each charm as well. This article will be updated with that information as I obtain it.
How To Get Charms
There are several ways that you can receive a Charm in M2:
Charms can be sent to you as a Gift using the Recruit -> Send Gifts to Friends subtab – Coin charms only. Note that the selection of giftable charms is regularly changed by Playdom.

Snake Coin                          Tiger Coin               Medallion charms can be purchased using                                                                                                    Favor Points  for 1 FP each.

Non-coin and non-medallion charms are rewarded when getting a special bonus from Facebook newsfeed postings

Slot Machine bonuses reward you with Four Leaf Clover Luck Charms.

Other types of charms are rewarded by claiming them through Facebook newsfeed posts

Medallion charms are randomly rewarded when doing the Whack a Mole mission in Coney Island. If you receive an Energy Charm (Saint Damian Medallion) when doing this mission, it will be automatically applied at that time!

Medallions can be rewarded randomly when doing the Whack a Mole mission in Coney Island. This example shows the unique case of getting an Energy Charm in that it is immediately applied. Other medallions will go into your inventory for later use.

Dragon Coins can be sent as a Gift when the Godfather’s Gift dialog appears randomly while doing missions

When doing missions, you will randomly receive a Godfather's Gift dialog in which you can send Dragon Coins to your mob members.

Medallion charms are rewarded randomly when spinning the Wheel of Weapons in Coney Island

When you spin the Wheel of Weapons in Coney Island, you may
                                         randomly receive a Medallion Charm.

Saint Martin Medallions can also be won from Day 5 of the Daily Bonus

You will get 2 Saint Martin Medallions from Day 5 of the Daily Bonus

Coin charms are rewarded randomly when you receive a Mystery Gift.

When you open a Mystery Gift, you may receive a randomly selected charm!

Additional charms can be obtained from doing the Rackets

Work the System Rackets  |  60 Minute - Lodestone charm   |  6 Hours - Random Coin charm

Work the Crowd Rackets | 4 Hours - Guardian charm

Additional Medallion charms can be won from the 1 FP version of the Instant Lotto Scratcher mission in Coney Island

There is a daily limit of 10 rewards that you can obtain from the Facebook feed news items. This includes helping fellow mobsters on their missions (which rewards $$$ and XP). I recommend that you help with your maximum of 5 missions first, then collect the remaining 5 rewards as charms or other bonuses. See my separate article on a Daily Checklist for Mobsters for more details.
Type of Charms
There are six types of charms in Mobsters 2 which are fully documented in this article:

DEFENSE: Boost defense strength during fights.
ATTACK: Boost attack strength during fights.
ENERGY: Recover energy after completing a mission.
CASH: Boost experience gained during missions.
EXPERIENCE: Boost cash reward gained during missions.
RISK REDUCTION: Boost chance of success during a risky mission.
Further, there are up to three variants of these charm types:

Medallion : Usually the most powerful of the variants, typically purchased
Coin : Often very powerful, typically received as Gifts
Item : The weakest of the variants, typically received as Newsfeed Bonuses

DEFENSE – Guardian Charm (Dog Coin, Horseshoe)

        Dog Coin - Defense/Guardian Charm              Horseshoe - Defense/Guardian Charm
This charm will increase your defense strength when someone is attacking you. This charm will boost your Defense stats by an unknown amount.

Dog Coin
The Dog Coin is obtained as a straight Gift, Mystery Gift or from the 6 hour Work The System Racket. The Dog Coin is the strongest of the Defense charms.
Horseshoe
The Horseshoe is now only obtained by doing the 4 hourWork The Crowd Racket.
It was also previously given when someone responds to a special newsfeed notification that is sent out when someone is critically wounded and needs help. (Read this article for details on this retired game feature.)
NOTE: The Critically Wounded feature has been removed from the game, but I have left this information in the article for historical reference and completeness.
TIP: You can quickly obtain several Guardian Charms by scanning through your Facebook feed for requests for help from fellow mob members. You can search your feed for the text string “Guardian Charm” using your browser’s Find feature. Click on the Help Out link to get your Charm (and give your friend a First Aid Kit!)
Use the Older Posts link at the bottom of the Facebook page to go back through your older posts for the entire day and you will quickly find a number of Guardian Charms you can obtain! Requests for help from seriously wounded mob members must be answered within 48 hours of their posting into the feed.
The Guardian Charm is automatically applied the next time you are attacked by applying an unknown amount of boost to your defense.

ATTACK – War Charm (Tiger Coin, Saint Michael Medallion, Snake Eye Dice)

Tiger Coin - Attack/War Charm              Saint Michael Medallion - Attack/War Charm

Pair of Snake Eye Dice - Attack/War Charm

This charm will increase your attack strength when you attack another mobster. This charm will boost your Attack stats by an unknown amount. You will see this charm displayed in the attack results dialog:
Tiger Coin
The Tiger Coin is obtained as a straight Gift or from the 6 hour Work The System Racket.
Saint Michael Medallion
The Dog Coin is obtained as purchased loot, Wheel of Weapons reward , Daily Bonus reward, Instant Lotto Scratcher mission prize or Whack a Mole random loot drop.
Snake Eye Dice
The Snake Eye Dice is obtained as a bonus from Icingnewsfeed postings.

ENERGY – Energy Charm (Dragon Coin, Saint Damian Medallion, Pair of Lucky Seven Dice)

Dragon Coin - Energy Charm                    Saint Damian Medallion - Energy Charm

Pair of Lucky Seven Dice - Energy Charm

This charm will recover energy after completing a mission. In general, you want to make sure that you receive one of these items just before doing a mission with high energy cost – preferably 175 or higher.

Energy charms will not actually credit you the energy stated on the mission completion screen in the following two cases:
a) the experience from the mission has leveled you up
b) you have used Coffee to the point that you are already above your Max Energy.
in either case, some or all of the energy “returned” to you will not be realized.
NOTE: There seems to be no correlation between mission success and the Energy charm’s return percentage. You can fail the mission and still get a regular energy return.
Dragon Coin
The Dragon Coin is obtained as a straight Gift, Godfather’s Gift or from the 6 hour Work The System Racket. The percentage of energy returned is a random percentage of the original energy cost constrained between 10 and 100%. On average, the Dragon Coin returns 39.2% of the energy of the current mission, so accept the coin only if the mission you will run next has more than 191 energy requirement to get maximum results.

The energy returned by a Dragon Coin is not a flat distribution. Thanks to "ruthless019" on the M2 Forum for this chart and other tips.
Saint Damian Medallion
The Saint Damian Medallion is obtained as purchased loot, Wheel of Weapons reward, Instant Lotto Scratcher mission prize or Whack a Mole random loot drop. When obtained from the Whack a Mole mission, it is used immediately with only a small amount of energy returned.
Pair of Lucky Seven Dice
The Pair of Lucky Seven Dice is obtained as a bonus from Hack a Secure Account High Score newsfeed postings.

CASH – Fortune Charm (Rat Coin, Saint Charity Medallion, Lodestone)

Rat Coin - Cash/Fortune Charm                Saint Charity Medallion - Cash/Fortune Charm

                                          Lodestone - Cash/Fortune Charm

This charm will boost cash reward gained during missions. The percentage of bonus $$$ returned is a random percentage of the original $$$ payout – constrained between 100% and 150%.
TIP: If you get one of these charms when doing the Whack a Mole mission, you really want to find the mission that will reward the most cash as your next mission.
IMPORTANT TIP: You will want to have at least one of these Charms on-hand when you are doing the Kill Natasha “Godfather” mission in Moscow. You can receive as much as $2 Million in bonus cash if you do. There are also other special Godfather missions (such as Deliver Art to Pierre or Eliminate Gambling Syndicate) which have high cash payouts. You should definitely get a Cash/Fortune charm into your inventory before doing such missions – even if you have to spend 1 FP to purchase one!
Rat Coin
The Rat Coin is obtained as a straight Gift, Mystery Gift or from the 6 hour Work The System Racket.
Saint Charity Medallion
The Saint Charity Medallion is obtained as purchased loot, Wheel of Weapons reward, Instant Lotto Scratcher mission prize or Whack a Mole random loot drop.
Lodestone
The Lodestone is obtained from the 60 minute Work The System Racket or as a bonus from Attend a Funeral andLevel Up newsfeed postings. Also, when you post one of these postings into your Facebook wall and people collect the bonus, you will receive Lodestones as well. Up to 7 Lodestones per posting.

EXPERIENCE – Knowledge Charm (Snake Coin, Saint Albert Medallion, Alligator Foot)

Snake Coin - Experience/Knowledge Charm       Alligator Foot - Experience/Knowledge Charm

Saint Albert Medallion - Experience/Knowledge Charm

This charm will boost experience gained during missions. The percentage of bonus experience returned is a random percentage of the original experience payout – constrained between ??% and ??%.
Snake Coin
The Snake Coin is obtained as a straight Gift or Mystery Gift.
Saint Albert Medallion
The Saint Albert Medallion is obtained as purchased loot, Wheel of Weapons reward, Instant Lotto Scratcher mission prize or Whack a Mole random loot drop.
Alligator Foot
The Alligator Foot is obtained as a bonus from Achievementnewsfeed postings. This is the weakest of the Experience charms – returning the lowest amount.

RISK REDUCTION – Luck Charm (Rabbit Coin, Saint Martin Medallion, Four Leaf Clover)

Rabbit Coin - Risk Reduction/Luck Charm        Four Leaf Clover - Risk Reduction/Luck Charm

Saint Martin Medallion - Risk Reduction/Luck Charm

The Luck charm will boost your chance of success during a risky mission by reducing the risk.
Most people completely misunderstand how the Luck charm works. Unlike all other charms, the Luck charm can be used multiple times. Here is what happens:

There are three levels of risk for missions as shown above.
When you do a mission that has either mild or high risk, the game picks one of your Risk Reduction/Luck charms at random. It then subtracts the Luck value of that item (either +7, +15 or +25) from the risk factor of the mission. My calculation is that missions with mild risk have about a 15% risk of failure and that missions with high risk have about a 33% risk of failure.
Therefore, you would have the following occurs with a luck charm and risky mission:

—————————————— Mild Risk ———————— High Risk
Rabbit Coin (+15) ————— Adjusted Risk: 0% ———— Adjusted Risk: 18%
St. Martin Medallion (+25) — Adjusted Risk: 0% ———— Adjusted Risk: 8%
Four Leaf Clover (+7) ———— Adjusted Risk: 8% ———— Adjusted Risk: 26%
Four Leaf Clover (+15) ——— Adjusted Risk: 0% ———— Adjusted Risk: 18%
Four Leaf Clover (+25) ——— Adjusted Risk: 0% ———— Adjusted Risk: 8%
NOTE: Remember that if you have more than one variant of the same type of charm, the game randomly chooses which one to use for its calculations.
Now, here is where a lot of people get confused. After the game has applied the Luck value of the charm to the risk calculation, it then randomly decides whether or not to destroy the charm! This is essentially the same thing that occurs when you use one of the Police Badges. It is possible that the Luck charm will be destroyed after only one “use” or last for dozens of uses. (I don’t know the percentages applied to the destruction calculation.)
It appears that the destruction of a Luck charm is influenced by the success or failure of a mission and that the charm is more likely to be destroyed if a mission fails. This has led to the confused belief that the Luck charm itself is constantly failing! This is not true – you will see Luck charms destroyed even when a mission succeeds, it’s just not as common.
It is known that having more than one of the Luck charms on hand does not affect the results – the risk reduction cannot be stacked.
SUMMARY: If you have any variant of Luck charm in inventory, its Luck value is used EVERY TIME you do a risky mission and randomly destroyed in the process.
Rabbit Coin
The Rabbit Coin is obtained as a straight Gift, Mystery Gift or from the 6 hour Work The System Racket. The Rabbit Coin applies a value of +15 to your Luck.
Saint Martin Medallion
The Saint Martin Medallion is obtained as purchased loot, Wheel of Weapons reward, Instant Lotto Scratcher mission prize or Whack a Mole random loot drop. The Saint Martin Medallion applies a value of +25 to your Luck.
Four Leaf Clover
The Four Leaf Clover is obtained as a bonus from Slot Machine newsfeed postings. The Four Leaf Clover applies a value of +7, +15 or +25 to your Luck (randomly determined.)
NOTE: You can create a Slot Machine post on your wall without spending FP to actually play the mini-game. Simply click the Do This button and then click the close box (x) in the upper right corner without playing the game. You will be given the chance to share your “good luck” with your friends. Do that and the post will appear so your friends can collect Four Leaf Clovers.
IMPORTANT TIP: You will want to have at least one of these Charms on-hand when you are doing the Create The Perfect Getaway Car mission in Coney Island. This will SIGNIFICANTLY increase your chance of obtaining The Mother of All Getaway Cars with 88/88 Attack/Defense stats! It has been proven to cut the FP cost in HALF at least. See my separate article on Getting Lucky with The Mother of All Getaway Cars for more details.
